When Should You Remove The Garage Floor Paint?

Your garage floor has been painted a long time ago and now it looks pretty bad. Now you don’t know what to do, to repaint over the old paint or to remove the old paint. Well that depends on how the paint was damaged over the years. You can do whatever you wish if the paint is in good condition, but the safest way always is to remove the garage floor paint.

If the old paint is not peeling off or flaking, it means that it is in a good condition. In this case it means that it can be used as a base coating. However before you apply the second coating you should remove all the paint, which might be loose. You can do that by using a pressure washer. Usually the paints which are being used for garage floors can be glossy. You should de-gloss so it won’t interfere with the second coating. You can do that by using etch for example. All that is left to do is to thoroughly remove the stains that might be present, before applying the second coating. Be sure to use a high quality and strong detergent for stains like oil, gasoline or other chemicals. When you are done cleaning leave it for a while so it can dry, then you can apply the new coating.

If the condition of the old paint is very bad then the best thing to do is completely remove it. You can do that by using a stripper. You could also use an abrasive blast machine or a wire brush. These options could be better than the stripper, because you get exposed to chemicals with it. It also is very important that you protect yourself when preparing chemicals for a paint job. You could breathe particles, which can cause a lot of damage; that is why it is strongly recommended that you wear protective clothing before you work with chemicals. If you want to be sure that you take all safety precautions, then you should ask the vendor of the chemicals or a professional. It could be very important to your health.

It doesn’t matter if you choose to remove the paint or if you apply a second coating over the old paint, the most important things are that you do the preparations right. First comes the protection, then you can check if the old paint is in good condition or not in order to decide what to do.
